Experience Idaho's scenic byways during
representative exercise challenge bike ride
The road to improved fitness begins with a bike tour of Idaho.
“In the spirit of the ‘Tour de France,' the 2009 exercise challenge will be a representational bike ride through Idaho’s scenic and historic byways in our own ‘Tour de Byways,' " explains Pauline Davis of ITD’s Wellness Committee.
Employees are invited to engage in the annual rite of spring to reawaken bodies left dormant by winter in the fitness challenge that starts Sunday (April 26). Although the deadline for registering isn’t until May 1, the fitness “clock” begins ticking this weekend. The challenge concludes July 4.
The challenge is to exercise at least three hours per week for the next 10 weeks (a combined total of 30 hours) to receive one of three prizes for completion – a “dri-mesh” long sleeve shirt, a fleece jacket or a cap. Participants are asked to make their choice on the official registration form.
“Through your exercise, you will leave stress behind and discover the serenity and wonders of Idaho,” according to the fitness promotion. “Our challenge has a bicycle theme, but don’t worry. Whatever exercise you choose, your time spent exercising converts to bicycle travel along Idaho’s byways.
“While you are tracking exercise and recording your time, you will have the chance to learn about Idaho’s byways. Then when you do travel, you will be better prepared to explore the history and beauty of our state.”
Log sheets are due every two weeks. Completion of exercise hours can be symbolically tracked along Idaho’s scenic and historic byways. Team captains will distribute electronic log sheets next week. Participants who turn in their log sheets on time every two weeks also will be eligible to win a team raffle drawing.
Progress is based on time spent exercising, rather than the degree of difficulty.
While the commitment to improved fitness is personal, participation in the annual challenge also is team oriented. Each year one district team and one Headquarters team will earn honors and a trophy for the highest percentage of finishers. A traveling trophy also is awarded in friendly competition between ITD and Federal Highway Administration employees.
