Idaho Press Women sponsor open photo contest

Do you have a great photo taken at a family reunion or on a vacation trip? Or maybe a picture snapped at a sporting activity or as part of the job? Enter it in this year’s Idaho Press Women photo contest for amateur and professional photographers.

The contest is open to anyone who takes photos – from moms at soccer games to professionals with studios. Entries will be judged on quality, artistic expression, impact and viewpoint, “all of those things we consider when we try to figure out why a photo touches our hearts,” said Cathy Koon, District 6 public information specialist.

Entries are due by March 15, and winners will be announced during the organization’s annual spring conference April 30-May 1 in Boise. The photo contest is separate from IPW’s annual communications contest and is open to non-members, amateurs and professionals.

Cash prizes will be awarded in each category. The amount will depend on the number of entries received. Those who attend the spring conference will vote on a People’s Choice winner to receive an additional $50 cash prize.

Photographs can be entered in two general categories: color or black-and-white. Sub-categories in each of the general categories are:

  • Why I love Idaho
  • People
  • Scenic/wildlife
  • Action/sports
  • Special effects (double exposures, computer generated effects, etc.)

Photos should be no larger than 8 inches by 10 inches. Photos can be submitted on disk but will be printed on an ink jet printer for judging. Do not send framed or mounted prints.

The entrant’s name, category and sub-category should be written on the back of the photograph in the lower left-hand corner. For publicity purposes, please include a short biography of the photographer.

Mail entries to Koon at 43 East 3rd South, St. Anthony, ID 83445 no later than Monday (March 15). The fee is $5 per photo. Entries cannot be returned unless accompanied by a self-addressed, stamped envelope. Winners will be notified by mail.

Anyone interested in attending the conference for the contest presentation May 1 can request conference information from IPW President Meg Donahue, P.O. Box 405, Challis, ID 83226, or log on to the IPW web site at
