U.S. 20/Idaho 75, Timmerman Rest Area

Project Facts
Key Number: 9618
Project Number: NH-2340(106)

The Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) proposes to upgrade the Timmerman Rest Area to better serve the growing number of travelers using U.S. 20 and Idaho 75. Improvements include expanding the parking area, improving site access, replacing restroom facilities, enhancing safety, landscaping and upgrading water and wastewater systems. Construction is currently programmed for 2010.

Project Backgound
The Timmerman Rest Area is located adjacent to two major state highways – U.S. 20 and Idaho 75. U.S. 20 is a two-lane east-west highway and Idaho 75 is a two-lane north-south highway that is the primary access to the Wood River Valley and Sun Valley area. The existing rest area site currently has five designated parking stalls for car/RV/truck with additional parking available along the internal roadway.

The existing site has two full accesses – one on U.S. 20 and one on Idaho 75. The rest area has heavy usage during peak travel periods. The U.S. 20 corridor currently has Average Daily Traffic (ADT) count of 2,100 with approximately 18% using the rest area. The Idaho 75 corridor has an ADT of 4,900 with approximately 9% using the facility.

Project Description
The Timmerman Rest Area improvements are designed to accommodate growth over the next 20 years. The U.S. 20 and Idaho 75 corridors are expected to see a 49% and 47% growth in traffic respectively.

At the current funding level, the following improvements are scheduled:

  Safety Enhancements
  • Acceleration and deceleration lanes are planned for U.S. 20 and Idaho 75 to improve the safety of traffic entering and exiting the site.
  • ADA accessible parking, ramps and rest room facilities will be included.
Parking Enhancements
  • Addition parking will be provided for 54 cars and 10 trucks.
  • Better separation of trucks and cars in the parking facility.
Building and Site Enhancements
  • Expanded facilities will include 10 rest room stalls with accommodation for family usage.
  • Indoor information kiosks and services.
  • Increased water and wastewater facilities to accommodate the new facility.
  • Improved site drainage to address runoff and improve the water quality of the adjacent stream.
  • Upgraded picnic shelter facilities with the addition of an expanded joint use shelter for larger groups.
