Shoshone North, Idaho 75 Project

Project Facts
Key Number: 7699
Project Number: STP-2390(131)

The Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) is proposing a major widening and re-alignment of Idaho75 from the city of Shoshone to Thorn Creek Road (mileposts 74-82).

Project Background
In the late 1990s, ITD considered improvements to Idaho 75 north of Shoshone to Timmerman Hill to increase traffic capacity and improve safety. Engineers determined that only the first eight miles of highway north of Shoshone needed significant improvements. The remaining 20 miles are adequate to safely handle existing traffic.

Project Description
The new project on Idaho 75 (milepost 74-82) will:
  • construct 2 lanes in each direction
  • include a 14-foot median to serve as a two-way left turn lane and a turn bay at county roads, narrowed to a 4-foot paved median where the roadway passes through the Bureau of Land Management jurisdiction, where there are no access points (mileposts 75-77).
  • build new bridges at Milner-Gooding Canal, Big Wood River and North Gooding Canal
  • add a Port of Entry pullout (milepost 76).
With the design, approximately 80 feet of additional privately-owned land right of way will be needed. Negotiations of right of way purchases are scheduled to begin after October 2005.

Construction of the project will be done in two stages. The first is scheduled for spring 2008 with the remainder to be completed in 2010. Funding will determine final scheduling. The first stage will build the new bridges and construct the new roadway almost to 420 North Road.

A preliminary Environment Assessment (EA) has been sent to the Federal Highway Administration for approval. Upon approval, this document will be available for public review. A Public Hearing concerning the EA will be held in conjunction with a Public Information meeting in fall 2005.
