Thank you for your interest in GRAIL. Here you will find specific instructions on
how to download and install the GRAIL software.
How To Install GRAIL
| 0. |
THE BEST WAY TO GET GRAIL... Order the GRAIL CD-ROM! There is close to
400 MB of data that GRAIL uses, and data and software updates are available on
the web. CD-ROM's of GRAIL can be ordered at little or no cost from the
Planning Services Section of the Idaho Transportation Department. For more
information, please email David Coladner at
david.coladner@itd.idaho.gov or Charles Gillin at
charles.gillin@itd.idaho.gov. But if you must install it from here, proceed
to step 1. |
| 1. |
Prepare a directory structure for GRAIL. Using File Explorer or DOS,
choose a place in your directory structure to install grail and create a directory
called "grail". Below the "grail" directory, create three more directories, named:
"kangaroo" (yes, just like the marsupial), "marplot", and "bem". The resulting
directory structure should look like this:
 |
| 2. |
Download the main program and configuration files. Using the browser,
go to the GRAIL 'Go Configure' Configuration Page
and download all files listed in the table and place them in the "grail"
directory created in step 1. You will need to unzip the executable file as it is
compressed. |
| 3. |
Download the roadway data files. Using the browser,
go to the GRAIL 'Datamania' Page and download all
files listed in the table that you as the user may find useful and place them
in the "grail\kangaroo" directory created in step 1. |
| 4. |
Download the 'Marplot' mapping data files. Using the browser,
go to the GRAIL Mapping Data 'Mapster' Page and download
the huge "marplot.zip" file and place it in the "grail\marplot" directory created in
step 1. WARNING!!! This file is very large (38 MB)! Once the zip file is
placed in the "grail\marplot" directory, you will need to run a 'zip' file uncompression
program such as PKUNZIP or WINZIP. When the files are restored, they should be a series
of files with the *.obj file extention in a directory structure that resmembles this:
The Marplot data expands to fill about 130 MB,
so you'll want to make sure there's room. These files provide GRAIL with the ability to
show background map information such as city and county boundaries, roads, and hydrography.
While will survive without these files, it is strongly recommended that they be downloaded.
The first screen that GRAIL presents the user with relies heavily on Marplot data, without
it, whole areas of GRAIL's feature set go away!

| 5. |
Download the 'BEM' mapping data files. Using the browser,
go to the GRAIL Mapping Data 'Mapster' Page and download
the 2 big files "bem_e.zip" and "bem_w.zip" and place them in the "grail\bem" directory created in
step 1. WARNING!!! These files are very large (30 & 32 MB)! As in step 4,
you will want to use a 'zip' file uncompression program on these files. The BEM data
expands to about 140 MB, so make sure there is room on your hard drive for it!
These files provide colorful elevation data for GRAIL to display in the background
of its maps, but it is not necessary for GRAIL to function. If you can find
someone with the GRAIL CD-ROM, it would be easiest to get the data from there!

The Grail Documentation
The "GRAIL documentation" serves as a user's guide to the GRAIL program. It assumes the
user has a copy of GRAIL CD-ROM, however, it is mostly geared at how to use the software
once it is installed. Any help that may be needed in installing and using GRAIL can be
obtained by calling David Coladner at the Idaho Transportation Department, (208) 334-8233,
or Charles Gillin, (208) 334-8232. Additionally, help can be provided by sending email
to either of the following addresses:
david.coladner@itd.idaho.gov or
charles.gillin@itd.idaho.gov.
