year.

cost of work zone collisions was $16.4 million, including
medical treatment, emergency services, property damage,
workplace costs and household productivity.

NATIONWIDE
• A total of 1,181 people were killed in work zone
crashes during 2002 (the most recent year for which figures
are available). With more than a 55% increase in work zone
fatalities between 1997 and 2002, work zone safety is a
growing roadway safety concern.
• Four
out of every five work zone fatalities were motorists.
• Across
the country, there is one work zone fatality every 7 hours
(3 a day), and one work zone injury every 15 minutes (143
a day).
