Maintenance Operation School Outreach Program - Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Maintenance Operations School Outreach Program? Through the Maintenance Operations School Outreach Program primary school students attend safety presentations that familiarize the students with the type of work maintenance crews do and the equipment they use, while at the same time teaching them how to remain safe around maintenance equipment and work zones. How can my school participate in the Maintenance Operations School Outreach Program? A school employee, acting as the school´s contact person with ITD, completes
ITD0180 Maintenance Operations School Outreach Program Application. The application is postage-paid and pre-addressed to
ITD´s Volunteer Services Coordinator. How is the safety information provided to the students? ITD personnel come to your school and talk with the children about work zone safety. Every student receives a complimentary Work Zone Safety Kids´ Activity Book and the information provided in the book and the resulting questions and answers session complete the classroom presentation. Next, the presentation moves outdoors, where the students are shown various maintenance equipment, for example snowplows and sanders. The students are instructed about how each piece of equipment works; they can inspect the equipment and ask questions. Many times they can sit in the seat of the equipment and get a better idea of what the driver can and cannot see when operating the equipment. How does my school let ITD know that the presentation has taken place? After the presentation, ITD personnel will leave an ITD0181 Maintenance Operations School Outreach Presentation Report Card with the school´s contact person. The contact person completes the pre-addressed card and mails it to the Volunteer Services Coordinator. Information provided on the cards helps ITD know how many students received maintenance safety training and gives attendees the opportunity to provide ITD feedback about the presentation.
