Excellence in Transportation
Award

Purpose:
The Excellence in Transportation Award is sponsored annually by the Idaho Transportation
Department to recognize outstanding initiatives to develop, plan, and implement
transportation projects throughout Idaho.
Eligibility:
Any firm or agency engaged in transportation related projects in Idaho is eligible
to enter. Submitted projects must be located in Idaho. The entry must be a public
transportation improvement or project completed in the last three calendar years
inclusive of the current year and presently in use. Projects submitted in previous
years may be resubmitted if completed during the aforementioned time span. Winning
projects from previous years are ineligible. A project may be entered in as many
categories as desired. A separate application must be submitted for each category
entry.
Recognition and Awards:
Two awards will be given in each category; one for small projects and one for
large projects. An award will be given for each winning project. Individuals contributing
to a winning project will receive certificates of recognition.
The award categories are:
- Transportation Planning
- Environmental Stewardship
- Public Participation
- Design
- Construction

Award Criteria:
- Innovation: Describe what innovative engineering, design or construction
approaches were used to overcome project challenges and what makes these efforts
unique. Describe what types of successes have occurred as a result of this
innovative process.
- Context Sensitive Solutions: Describe any approaches that integrated and
balanced community, aesthetic, historic, and environmental value with transportation
safety, maintenance, and performance goals.
- Community and Public Involvement: Describe how this project successfully
engaged the community in the planning process and the benefits of the public’s
input. How has the community and public involvement process for this project
made a positive difference in the community?
- Partnerships and Collaboration: Describe any partnerships that were formed
to facilitate the development and implementation of this project and how these
partnerships made a difference. Are there any mechanisms in place to foster
the continuation of these partnerships? Were non-traditional groups represented
as well, such as those outside the transportation arena?
- Quality of User Experience: What is the overall enhancement of the transportation
system? Does the project address multimodal transportation options including
bicycle, pedestrian, and automobile in an effort to integrate transportation?
- Safety, Maintenance and Operational Factors: Describe any unique or improved
procedures involving management/maintenance, litter reduction, community outreach,
storm water quality improvements, resource conservation, safety improvement,
and cost reduction.
Entry Requirements
Entries must consist of the following:
- Three collated sets of the entry form and narrative
- A list of firm/agency/owner(s) involved in project (no more than 3)
- A list of key personnel contributing to the project (no more than 6)
- One 24" x 36" mounted display panel illustrating the project
- Label display panel with project title, location, award category, and name
of entrant
- A disk/cd containing digital photos of the project
- Include a word document describing images identified in photo files
- All materials entered become the property of ITD and will not be returned
Entry Deadline:
Applications must be received by the ITD Awards Coordinator by May 27, 2008 by
4:00 p.m.
Judging:
Winning entries will be selected by a panel of qualified and experienced judges
from across the transportation profession. Recipients of the Excellence in Transportation
Award will be announced at a formal award’s presentation held at the ITD
Headquarters’ Auditorium on June 26, 2008 from 2:00 p.m. – 4:00
p.m. Refreshments will be provided.
