A Focus Area Component of Idaho's Transportation Vision 2004-2034
| Following a great
deal of work by Steering Committee members from the agencies and entities
noted below, the Idaho Airstrip Network (IAN) Action Plan was adopted by the
Idaho Transportation Board in June of 2005. Since that time two
subcommittees have been formed: |
|
|
- an Organization and Governing committee, and
- a Classification/Inventory committee
|
| The Governing
committee has arrived at a format for implementing the Action Plan which
will include the hiring of a part-time contractor to oversee implementation
of the Plan. The Classification committee has established a format for
classifying backcountry airstrips. This classification will include items
such as the general setting of the airstrip, amenities offered, facilities
established, road access, level of risk and difficulty, historical
significance, and much more.
During the next twelve months efforts will focus on
establishing skill sets required of the contractor, getting them in place,
adding to the inventory of airstrips, fund raising, and establishing
operational guidelines and Memorandums of Understanding between
agencies/entities. |
| |
| The IAN is widely
supported not only by aviators and governmental agencies within and without
Idaho, but also by various non-resident aviation foundations and
associations. At this point there is one owner of a private airstrip who is
interested in joining the Network, thereby opening the strip for public use,
and hopefully more will follow as word gets out about the importance of this
portion of Idaho's transportation network. A bill was passed in the 2006
legislature which relieves private airstrip owners of liability in the event
of an accident; therefore it is hoped this will help in opening up more
private strips to public use. |
