This project reconstructed the Orchard Street Interchange to allow additional lanes to be built on I-84. The project included widening and connecting two bridges that run over the New York Canal in the project area.

The new Orchard Street Interchange was built west of the old structure to improve traffic flow and reduce interruptions during construction. Improvements included: A new interchange bridge with eight lanes, expanded on- and off-ramps, new sidewalks and bicycle lanes on Orchard Street, Victory Road and Wright Street.Wright Street and Victory Road will be shifted to improve traffic flow and reduce delays.

Background

This project is a result of an Environmental Assessment and a planning study for I-84 from just west of the Orchard Interchange to the Isaacs Canyon Interchange (Eisenman Road). The interstate, built in the late 1960’s was not designed to handle the current traffic volumes. The study recommended improvements for this corridor, including replacing the existing pavement, adding lanes to the interstate, installation of soundwalls, and reconstructing the Orchard, Vista, Broadway, and Gowen interchanges to meet future traffic capacity requirements.

Schedule

The New York Canal bridge widening began in August 2008 and was completed in late April 2009. For the Orchard Street Interchange, preliminary design was completed in February 2008 and final design was completed in October 2008. Right-of-way acquisitions were completed in September 2008. Construction began in April 2009 and substantial completion was achieved April 2010.
