The Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) constructed soundwalls on the north side of I-84 between the Cole Road and Broadway Avenues interchanges.

The new walls connect with the existing soundwalls west of the Orchard Interchange. The walls range in height from 14 to 16 feet on the motorist side. ITD determined the wall design and texture through an extensive outreach process.

Background

This project is a result of an Environmental Assessment and a planning study for I-84 from just west of the Orchard Interchange to the Isaacs Canyon Interchange (Eisenman Road). The interstate, built in the late 1960’s was not designed to handle the current traffic volumes. The study recommended improvements for this corridor, including replacing the existing pavement, adding lanes to the interstate, installation of soundwalls, and reconstructing the Orchard, Vista, Broadway, and Gowen interchanges to meet future traffic capacity requirements.

ITD received environmental approval for this project from the Federal Highway Administration in November 2007. For more information about the Environmental Assessment, click here.

Schedule

Preliminary design was completed in November 2007 and final design and right-of-way were completed in January 2008. Construction began in April 2008 and substantial completion was achieved January 2009.
