The Idaho Transportation Department will replace the I-84, Meridian Interchange and widen and rehabilitate parts of I-84. The improvements will improve safety and traffic flow.

Improvements will include:

On Meridian Road

  • Three through lanes in each direction between Central Drive and Overland Road.
  • New curb, gutter, sidewalks and bicycle lanes.
  • Two dedicated left-turn lanes for each I-84 ramp.
  • A central traffic signal for all turning traffic.

On I-84

  • Four lanes in both directions under the Meridian Interchange.
  • Longer, wider on- and off-ramps to merge on and off the Meridian Interchange.
  • New pavement on the two outside lanes between Locust Grove and Five Mile Road.

The interchange design is a Single-Point Urban Interchange (SPUI) similar to the interchange at Ten Mile Road in Meridian and Vista Avenue in Boise. This interchange design improves traffic flow by using one set of signals in the middle of the interchange.

In addition to the Meridian Road Interchange reconstruction, ITD will be replacing the Broadway Avenue Interchange and Gowen Road Interchange in Boise. For more information, click here.

The current interchange at I-84 and Meridian Road was built in 1965. Since that time, interchange traffic has increased from 15,000 to 128,000 vehicles per day.

In 2008, ITD completed an environmental study of I-84 between Karcher Road in Nampa and Five Mile Road in Boise. The study recommended widening the interstate to four lanes in both directions between Garrity and Meridian interchanges. Many of the bridges over I-84 were replaced to accommodate additional lanes underneath. Replacing the Meridian Interchange will allow ITD to finish widening I-84.

  • December 2103-March 2014: Replace the bridge over Ten Mile Creek in the project area. COMPLETE
  • Spring 2014: Begin interchange reconstruction.
  • Spring/Summer 2014: Begin rehabilitating I-84 pavement between Locust Grove and Five Mile Road.
  • Late 2015: Construction complete.
