Interstate
86 (West) is both an Interstate and Intrastate highway, located entirely within
the state of Idaho. It runs from an intersection with Interstate 84 in Heyburn,
Idaho, to an intersection with Interstate 15 at Chubbuck, Idaho. It connects
the major eastern Idaho cities of Pocatello and Idaho Falls with Idaho's Magic
Valley region.
The highway
originally was numbered as Interstate 15W in the 1970s, but at the request of
the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials, was
renumbered to I-86 to avoid duplication of I-15. There also was an I-15E in
California at the time.
I-86 is the
shortest east-west interstate in the country. It is anticipated that NY-17 in
New York will become an eastern I-86.
